Victoria, BC - When Russ Trace, Vice President and partner in Capital City Paving of Victoria, BC, attended a trade show in Las Vegas a few years back he knew exactly what he was looking for – a compact grader that would function well in the hilly and curvy terrain of Victoria, British Columbia. He was immediately taken with the Champion Compact Graders he saw at the show. The small graders built with “big grader” features appeared tailor-made for his needs.
Capital City Paving Ltd. has specialized in residential and small commercial paving projects in the Victoria area and on the local islands since 1987. With a workforce of 70 employees, the firm has four graders in operation, including their recently acquired Champion C80 C Series.
“What impressed me most about the Champions,” Trace recalls, “was how well-engineered they looked compared to their competition. I knew a Champion would be the ideal machine for use in the Victoria area where my grader operators are continually working uphill, downhill and around corners of rock. We often have to pave around trees, rather than take them out.”
“Champion has always been a favorite of the highway maintenance contract people in BC and I’ve seen them being work-horses for years everywhere I’ve ever traveled. I’ve always appreciated what they can do and when I was looking at the models in Vegas, the Champion just looked so much sturdier than all of the other small graders we were considering at the time. My mind was made up” adds Trace.
Shortly after Russ Trace returned from Las Vegas, Capital City purchased its first Champion C80 C from Greg Eaton at Great West Equipment in Nanaimo, BC, the Champion dealer in the area. Trace and his staff couldn’t be happier with their acquisition.
Capital City grader operators are Champion lovers too!
The grader operators at Capital City Paving share their owner’s appreciation of the C80 C Series, which has been in operation now for close to two years. In fact, when he ordered the machine, Trace asked them for their input regarding what features should be includedon it.
“I let the grader operators order everything they wanted on it, and I think they ordered just about everything you could get,” jokes Trace. “As a result, our Champion C80 C Series is very operator-friendly.”
According to Trace, his operators love its power, visibility and overall size. He points out that the terrain in the Victoria area and most project requirements produce a lot of situations where his firm needs a smaller, very reliable grader like the Champion to get the job done. Jobs like driveways, small parking lots, tennis courts and others that require a lot of getting in and out of tight corners are no problem for the smaller machine. Fitted with a Scarifier on its front end, the C80 C spends most of its time doing specialized tasks like patchwork, small grading, trimming up edges and other detail work.
According to Jack Fantetti, one of the Champion’s primary operators, “The C80 C Series, with its hydrostatic drive, is the perfect machine for smaller projects that require detailing and finish grading. Its articulation, compact turning radius and great visibility really help in tight situations.”
Fantetti praises the grader’s good, clean start and power. He also really likes the machine’s hydraulic circle sideshift, an option he requested at the time of purchase.
“For a small machine it is really powerful and pushes quite a bit of material, even going uphill,” says Fantetti. “Its operator-friendly industry-standard controls make switching to the C80 C Series from larger graders a non-issue,” he adds.
Capital City Service Technician, Russ Flint, reiterates the operators’ fondness for the Champion C80 C Series. “They love it,” says Flint, echoing Russ Trace’s sentiments. Flint has been pleased with the machine’s service record and he appreciates the smaller grader’s durability and general problem-free maintenance.
Russ Trace looks forward to many more years of service out of his company’s Champion C80 C Series – the “little guy,” as he fondly calls it, which works hard every day, just like its larger counterparts.
