CHAMPION PRODUCTION CLASS GRADER POWER
The powertrain driving Champion Production Class Graders is the result of a detailed engineering program focused on delivering more punch for big jobs in small spaces, and doing it for the most efficient operating cost possible.
The system was developed in partnership with leading manufacturers of heavy equipment power components. The key components were matched to maximize power-to-the-ground while minimizing stresses to ensure long life and reliability.

Cummins QSB6.7 Tier 3 engine
All Champion Motors Graders are standardized on Cummins QSB Series engines. The Production Class C110 and C116 Graders are equipped with the 120 HP (89 kW) QSB6.7 6-cylinder engine. Compared to the 4-cylinder Cummins engines used in Champion’s hydrostatic-drive compact graders, the two extra cylinders offer a smoother drive and better torque-curve at the lower RPMs. Operators will rely much less on the grader’s inching pedal when they run at slow speeds.
In fine grading applications, for example, the grader operates with more power, providing superior control. The engine’s high torque translates into increased drawbar pull, allowing the operator to move more dirt at lower ground speed without changing gears.
With the Cummins PowerMatch™ system, Champion and Cummins engineers were able to shape power curves and ratings to match the unique tasks required from Production Class Graders, accounting for working environment, load factors, ambient temperatures and operating modes.
The large 6-cylinder displacement also gives the grader a 120 HP engine that is always working at the bottom end of its power range. The engine components are never over-stressed, resulting in:
- more uptime with less servicing
- longer lifecycle
- lower operating cost
QSB6.7 “green power” meets stringent Tier 3 emissions standards with Cummins advanced in-cylinder combustion technology, designed to reduce emissions without requiring additional controls downstream from the engine.
Funk DF150 Powershift Transmission
The job profile for Production Class Graders requires higher weight-to-power ratios and faster travel speeds than Champion compact graders. Because hydrostatic drives become less efficient in these ranges, Champion called for a new direct-drive system to match up with the 120 HP Cummins engine.
The Funk DF150 Powershift Transmission provides an excellent match to grading duty cycles with a configuration and feel that will be highly familiar to experienced grader operators.
With 8 forward and 4 reverse gears, the DF150 transmission parallels the most common gearing arrangement in the grading industry. The DF150 is fully sequential with a single-lever transmission controller, including electronic shifting with last-gear memory. The DF150 transmission optimizes temperature and load compensation providing maximum efficiency and comfort in any application. An inching pedal minimizes wear on the multi-disc master clutch, which is oil-cooled for long life.
NAF Gear-Drive Tandems
The gear-driven NAF tandems give Champion Production Class Graders a long lasting final-drive mechanism that reduces lag time in rapid duty-cycles and withstands load-shocks better than conventional chain drives. The gear drive is more compact than a chain drive and it eliminates the backlash or slack that can appear when reversing direction with a chain drive. In tight spaces that require the grader to make frequent direction changes, the gear-drive tandem provides smoother performance with less wear and stress.
Full perimeter rear frame
Like all Champion Graders, the Production Class powertrain is mounted to a full-perimeter rear frame that protects the engine and final drive from the stresses of rear-mounted attachments. Isolation mounts dampen the effects of vibrations and torque spikes, ensuring reduced maintenance time and longer life for the complete drive system.
